About Mr. Tyler Winkey

Mr. Winkey has been the 5th & 6th band director at W-SR Middle School for 3 years. He also helps with 7th and 8th grade bands as needed for additional instruction or support. Mr. Winkey also is the High School Boys Assistant Tennis Coach at WSR. Previous to W-SR, he was a shared teacher between Aplington-Parkersburg and AGWSR Schools for 5 years. At A-P, Mr. Winkey taught 5th & 6th grade band, taught a 6th grade music exploratory class, and was the high school band director at AGWSR. Mr. Winkey is a 2012 graduate of Wartburg College with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a Leadership Certificate. Trombone is his major instrument and he played in numerous ensembles during his time at Wartburg. Mr. Winkey held numerous ensemble office positions including president of the Wind Ensemble, vice-president of IBA and MENC, co-chair of I Heart Music Day, and section leader for several ensembles.

Mr. Winkey's favorite part of teaching 5th and 6th graders is the number of students he gets to teach each day. Currently, he teaches 200 students between the two grades and enjoys seeing their progress through their beginning band years. He also enjoys seeing them transition into 7th and 8th grade, seeing their continued growth and development as young and budding musicians.

Mr. Winkey has been married since 2014 to his wife, Kelsey, whom he met at Wartburg. Kelsey works at Orchard Hill Church in Cedar Falls as a graphic designer. They love to travel, volunteer at Orchard Hill Church and other area organizations, and spend quality time with friends and family. When Mr. Winkey is not at school or volunteering , he enjoys staying active outside and considers himself an outdoor recreationalist. Most recently, Mr. Winkey has become a competitor, completing several half marathons and triathlons. Originally from Aplington, he grew up with the band room being a familiar place since his dad was the middle school band director for many years; and currently directs the 5th grade band at A-P.

Mr. Winkey and his family live in Cedar Falls, where they have a 4 year-old Cavapoo, named Herky, who keeps them on their toes!
